 | Saint Martin de Londres |
In the reign of Charlemagne, a small village community gathered around its church dedicated to Saint-Martin. Dominating the lacustrian plain called " Londras ", on the antic way linking Nîmes to Toulouse, a priory was built under the influence of the Gellone monks (Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert).
This new edifice was built with the beautiful blond and golden limestone found in the marshland, marshes nowadays turned into vineyards and pasture lands. You will discover the most fascinating monument in the region, wonderfully housed in the medieval cloister, the " claustre ", fringed by character houses.
Stroll about the lanes, hidden behind the first precinct, always going up to the claustre. Once arrived to the " old fort ", you will enter the heart of an exceptionnal set, and be captivated by such beauty and harmony.
Why such an architectural master piece in this small village ? Why such a profusion of symbols ? It is a long... thrilling story... well deserving your full attention. When leaving this peaceful place, you will have but one desire : to linger over in the shade of the ancient plane trees to listen to the chat of the water springing from the fountain, mixed with the villagers even more expansive conversations.
